Following its re-introduction to the North American market with the 4C, Alfa Romeo is hitting hard with its next model, the Giulia. Initially launching in Quadrifoglio trim, this 3 Series-sized sedan comes armed to the hilt with technology and performance that will send its German rivals back with their tails between their legs.
Built on an all-new rear-wheel-drive platform, the Giulia channels Alfa’s storied racing pedigree and combines it with the expertise of Ferrari’s best engineers. The 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 was designed from the oil-pan up specifically for this vehicle, and produces an eye-popping 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is offered. Carbon fibre is extensively used throughout – the roof, driveshaft, and even it in the optional race-style bucket seats. As for the steering, suspension, and chassis, they come courtesy of the men that made the Ferrari 458 Speciale. Active aerodynamics and optional carbon ceramic brakes show Alfa’s dedication to performance. The proof is in the numbers: 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, and a Nurburgring lap time of 7:39 – just one second off the pace of the Lexus LFA.
Garden-variety Giulias will hit the market by the end of 2016, and will be powered by a 276-hp four-cylinder turbo. All-wheel drive and an automatic transmission will also be offered. Pricing and fuel economy details have yet to be confirmed; expect it to be competitive to the 3 Series, C-Class, and A4.
